Article 6 of the INDIE engagement policy contains provisions related to posting security. The chosen security option must be indicated on the INDIE Application Form.
Engagers with limited upfront cash resources should consider Option A.

Posting Security
Option A — No Bond (Weekly Prepayment to the Artist)
The Theatre must prepay the Artist’s weekly fee and prepay the Artist deductions to Equity on the Friday, prior to each engagement week. The first prepayment must be received by Equity prior to issuing contracts.
Option B — Bond
A standard bond may be posted with Equity. The amount of the posted security must be equal to:
- Contractual Fees for two weeks, plus
- An amount equivalent to the provincial and federal sales taxes, depending on the theatre’s point of origin
With a bond in place, the Artist should be paid weekly on the Thursday of each engagement week.
Bond release
The Engager must contact Equity to formally request the release of a bond. Before the bond can be released, all of the following steps must be completed:
- Engagement concluded
- Liaison report received, issues resolved
- No missing contracts or riders
- Contract fees and final Artist reimbursements paid
- Equity invoices paid
Artist Source Deductions
Article 8 of the INDIE contains provisions related to deductions remitted to Equity. An Engager is responsible for the deducting and remitting Working Dues, RRSP contributions, and the applicable insurance premium from Equity members, as well as an equivalent calculation from non-Equity members.
Equity will provide the Engager with a breakdown of the total fees, deductions, and net fees for Artists. Questions specific to deductions, remittances, and invoicing should be sent directly to our Finance team at engagerAR@caea.com.
Equity Member Deductions
- 2.25% for working dues
- 6% for RRSP contributions
- Applicable insurance premium
Non-member Permit Filing Fees
- 8.25% for filing fees
- Amount equivalent to applicable insurance premium
Non-member includes ACTRA or UDA Artists who have chosen not to join Equity.
Please note: Source deductions from non-member Artists are not RRSP, not dues, and not insurance premiums, and should not be reported as such.

The Engagement Week runs from Monday to Sunday, inclusive.
Insurance premiums for a full Engagement Week are deducted from the Artist’s fees and remitted to Equity.
Insurance premiums for a partial Engagement Week (at the beginning or end) are paid directly by the Engager and remitted to Equity.
