Permittees working under Equity’s jurisdiction enjoy the benefits of wages and working conditions established in the Association’s collective agreements and engagement policies.
Working as a Permittee
Permit Filing Fees
On each engagement, permittees pay 8.25% of their weekly fees to Equity as permit filing fees. Permit filing fees contribute to the essential work of the Association, including negotiating and administering collective agreements, protecting artists, and advocating on their behalf.
A percentage of the permit filing fees is credited to the permittee’s initiation fee, up to a maximum of $400 per contract.
Permit filing fees expire three years from the end of the associated contract. Permittees may request, in writing, an extension to the expiry date. The fee for an extension is $25.
Rights and Responsibilities While on an Equity Contract
While working under an Equity contract, permittees have the same rights and responsibilities as Equity members under the applicable collective agreement or engagement policy. They are expected to meet the terms of their contract and follow Equity’s Standard of Professional Conduct, as set out in the Bylaws. Additional rights and responsibilities are outlined below.
Insurance
Filing fees paid by permittees include coverage for basic medical coverage while on contract. This entitles them to accident insurance only, with no possibility of off-contract coverage.
Voting
Permittees are entitled to vote on concessions to the conditions of the applicable agreement or engagement policy they are working under. They are not, however, entitled to vote in the ratification of a new agreement.
Permittees may be present for the election of an Equity Liaison, but they are not entitled to run for the position or vote.
Pathway to Membership
The pathway for joining Equity may differ, depending on the discipline and circumstances of a permittee. For more information about becoming an Equity member, please refer to the Joining Equity section.
