Self-engaging allows Equity members to work under an Equity contract on productions that would not otherwise fall under Equity’s jurisdiction — for example, performing with an independent company or directing for an amateur organization.
This is most commonly done through Equity’s multidisciplinary Dance • Opera • Theatre (DOT) engagement policy.
Many Equity members also produce their own work — either collaboratively under policies like the Artist Collective Policy (ACP), or by engaging other members under policies like the INDIE.
When acting as a producer, a member assumes the same responsibilities as any other Engager, in addition to their obligations as an Equity member.
