Happy World Theatre Day!

World Theatre DayHappy World Theatre Day!

While we like to celebrate theatre and live performance every day, the annual World Theatre Day gives us an extra chance to honour the incredible artists and professionals who have dedicated their careers to bringing this art form to life across our country and around the world.

Today is also an opportunity to keep promoting the importance of theatre and live performance to all. Share your stories using #WorldTheatreDay and #GoSeeAShow!

"In the face of a 24-hour news cycle that continues to batter us with a barrage of doom and gloom messages of social upheaval, political turmoil and environmental disaster, I remain grateful for the refuge that live performing arts provides. This month, especially here in Canada, that refuge seems more important than ever before. We’re in a time of change, and things seem uncertain. But we still have the Theatre -- a place for gathering, for sharing stories, and for learning about ourselves and each other, with each other.

On this World Theatre Day, let us take an example from Greek theatre artist and educator Theodoros Terzopoulos, who reminds us of the ancient origins of our art form and its continuing potential to move us and encourage us today.

I am wishing you all an inspiring World Theatre Day.”

— Scott Bellis, Equity Council President and BC/Yukon Councillor

"Theatre is joy
Theatre is time evaporating into ideas
Theatre is laughter filling the empty space
Theatre is the tear that fell tonight, that has never fallen before
Theatre is body touching, touching ground, touching impulse, touching the edges of a box we built
Theatre is catalogues of human eccentricity recorded diligently, a map to the heart of a play
Theatre is strands of fibre electrocuted, tensing, releasing, coordinating lines, curves, arcs; shapes and shadows of our skin and muscle and bone
Theatre is tongue trowels digging, unearthing a word, and a word, and a word; words that meant once mean again, tracing over their contour, tasting their music
Theatre is calculations of femtoseconds to make the joke land
Theatre is braided rivers of thought conspiring, overlapping, lapping waves of light and sound against a living wall
Theatre is catching the eye of delight from the fourth row that makes the third act finally, thankfully, actually, possible to complete tonight

Theatre takes dreamers

Theatre gives dreams"

— André Morin, Ontario Councillor
