I have been an Equity member for the last 2.5 years. I have experienced many things in this period that have motivated me to run for Council.
During my first contract, I experienced bullying, harassment and abuse. This played out in an environment that was patently unsafe and lacked the support structures that should be available to us all. As someone who has gone through the reporting process, I know we can strengthen the system. As I have shared my story with my community, I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of stories from Equity colleagues, and the sad truth is my experience is far from isolated. My firsthand experiences have motivated me to work hard to ensure my fellow actors have the protections in place to feel safe and supported at work.
Additionally, it is important to me that there is clearer language regarding the D.O.T. where dance captains are guaranteed to be paid at the beginning of rehearsals, that non-Equity members who pay multiple permits and equivalent dues to participate on D.O.T.s are allowed to join the Association, and stronger mandates are in place with Engagers when it comes to self tape requests.
