Founder and major funder Joseph Shoctor started the first of the Citadel's theatres in 1965 in a former Salvation Army Citadel, and by 1976 had moved into a magnificent new building with four stages, developed a school for performing arts, a touring company and ACitadel Too@, for experimental theatre. Sean Mulcahy was artistic director from 1968-1973.
